Q: Why does severe background fogging occur on the Ricoh IM 2000 shortly after installing a new drum unit?
A: This issue can sometimes occur after replacing the drum unit and toner cartridge, particularly when severe background fogging or other print-quality problems appear after only a few dozen pages. When a new drum unit is installed, the first approximately 50 pages are typically printed using the toner that has been pre-loaded in the drum unit during production. Fresh toner from the toner cartridge is only introduced after the pre-loaded toner is consumed. Therefore, if the toner cartridge contains toner with poor charging characteristics, incorrect formulation, or compatibility issues, background fogging and other print-quality defects may become noticeable only after the machine begins feeding toner from the new cartridge.
How to Identify the Cause?
If the print quality is normal during the first several dozen pages but severe background fogging suddenly appears afterward, the toner cartridge should be checked as part of the troubleshooting process. For technicians, we recommend checking: * Toner quality and formulation * Compatibility between the toner and drum unit * Developer condition * Print quality before and after fresh toner is introduced This distinction is important when troubleshooting a new drum unit. A print-quality problem that appears only after the pre-loaded toner has been consumed does not necessarily indicate a defective drum unit. The toner and its compatibility with the imaging system should also be carefully evaluated.
